Sand Hollow Boating Trip
Last weekend our friends, the Buells, invited us out to Sand Hollow on their boat. I was a little nervous due to the fact that I have some major motion sickness issues, but thought it sounded fun and wanted to try it out anyway. They are a fun family and we love doing things with them. They came and got us Saturday morning at approx. 9 am. We went out to Sand Hollow and off we went. I did take an anti-nausea pill before we lift and sprayed us all with sunscreen. When we got out there we did some swimming while they got the knee board ready for their son. We hadn't been out yet this year so Brax was once again nervous about swimming with his life jacket. Brandon B. tied him to a rope and lowered him down into the water to ease his fear and it really helped. After that their boy went knee boarding and then Abbie. Branden decided to try it and did pretty well for a first timer. Brax was flipping out that his dad was out there though. He kept crying and saying get my dad back in the boat. I'm not quite sure why that was though. I'd finally decided to try until Brax started crying. Who knows? After that Brandon B. went out on the knee board for a little. Brax really wanted to fish after that so everyone got the poles out and baited them with worms. I was starting to get a little sick to my stomach so I jumped in the water and swam/treaded while they fished for an hour and a half. Brax ended up catching 7 fish and I think the Buell children caught 6 as well. They were all having a good time. We then drove in closer to the center island. Abbie and I took the three kids into shore and I took them to our favorite cliff jumping spot. We did some rock climbing to get our way across to the cliff. Their son and I jumped while Abbie and her daughter, as well as Brax watched and jumped off some rocks. We swam back to the boat after a while and then all they guys except Brax swam out and went jumping. It started to get windy so we all got back in the boat and headed back to shore. It was a lot of fun and I'm sure glad we went. I didn't reapply sunscreen though so my face is fried. For some reason, everyone else was okay. Thanks again Buells for a wonderful day on the water.
Fourth of July Weekend
For the 4th of July weekend we decided to head up and see family. We had a lot of things going on. We were throwing a baby shower for my sister and Branden's cousin got married. We were able to hit all the wedding ceremonies and Cara's baby shower went really well. We were able to visit with family and friends that we hadn't seen in a while. The baby shower was an open house and we had a lot of food. It was good to see people and have them come and go as they pleased. Branden's whole family ended up being there for the wedding festivities and so it was nice to spend time with everyone again. It doesn't happen that often. They had a great fireworks show after the family dinner and that was awesome! Of course you can't go a weekend at the Andersons without playing games either so we did a little bit of that too. I've learned I need to take more photos though. I have very few pictures of everything that we did.

Sunday was our relax day and then Monday was the 4th. Monday morning we were able to go to the Richfield parade with the Andersons and Arnells. We had fun watching the parade, although this year it was more of a driving advertisement. We normally go to my grandma Spencer's for lunch, but she didn't hold it this year so we went to Cara's apartment instead. We hadn't seen it yet. We then went to our friend's house and visited with them for a while. After that we hit our parent's house to say goodbye to everyone and headed home. We were exhausted because the Cowley cousins had a sleep over and didn't go to bed until about 4 am. I was barely able to get up that morning. We made it home in time to make dinner and for Brax and I to watch the Hurricane fireworks. I must say that I do prefer Hurricane's fireworks display to Richfield's. They did start the hill on fire above the water and power company buildings, but put it out quickly. We are blessed to have such wonderful families and friends.

Father's Day
Father's Day was a fun one for Brax this year. Branden just wanted money so he can save up for a pistol. Brax is like his mom though and wanted to pick daddy out a present. I had $10 off at JC Penney so I went in to get Branden some shorts that were $9.99 on sale. Brax found some shorts and an Angry Birds shirt he just had to get his dad. Brax was so excited to have Branden open the present he bought him. Branden ended up putting the shirt on Brax, but oh what a proud son we had that day. He sure loves his dad.

Vacation 2011
Day 1
Day 1 was not much of vacation. Brax had the last day of school so I went to his activity at Heritage Park. It was fun to watch him play with his friends. I then finished packing the car and suitcases. Brax had a baseball game that afternoon and as soon as it was over we headed to Venice. We stopped to check on our rental house as well as visit with my parents and sister before we headed out on vacation. We got to Glenwood about 10:30 pm and worked on getting the car totally packed for the morning. It was a late night and we didn't get to bed until midnight.
Day 2
We left Glenwood at approx 5 am with Branden, Brax, Errol, MaeBeth, and myself in the car. We met Brett and Christal with their little family at the Sigurd freeway entrance and got going on our journey. We stopped every couple hours. Christal was pregnant and needed to stop and it worked out that everyone else needed to as well. We'd visit and then get back in the car again. It was a long drive. We went through 10 tunnels and hooted and hollered through all of them. My sister-in-law, Katie taught us that. We even had Errol hollering with us. Just outside of Denver we split up and headed to Colorado Springs, CO to go to a money museum. They had Money of the Civil War and a man's personal collection (1/4 of it). Some of the coins in there were very rare. There were only 1-3 of some of them known to exist. The artwork on paper money back then was amazing as well. It was all hand painted and then put to a template. I learned a lot and was glad we took the detour to get there. We spent 1.5 hours there and then decided we better get on the road again. We arrived in North Platte, NE about 11 pm. Branden took Brax swimming while I got ready for bed.
Brax and Grandma played cards in the car quite a bit the first few days. We didn't bring any with us so she bought some at a convenience store when we fueled the cars and Brax bought some at the money museum as well as some gold flakes and a lucky coin.

Day 3
After breakfast and everything we decided we better get headed so we had time to do everything we wanted. We'd just left North Platte when Brett got pulled over. He didn't have a front license plate, but only got a warning. What a way to start the day. After that we didn't have any problems though. We were able to see a bunch of turkeys along the side of the road. It was pretty country. We were kind of hurrying along so we could get to the Omaha Zoo. Kelly had told us we should go there. It was a lot of fun to see things we hadn't before. They had a dark cave area with alligators below us and bats. They also had a lot of other things like rhinos, gorillas, tigers, etc. I'm glad that we went and had a good time. We were a little rushed so we could get Errol and MaeBeth to Des Moines for a dinner with Bryant, but we still got to see what we wanted to. We got to Des Moines in time and checked in for the night. We went out to dinner after the dinner crew had left and also picked up a few things at Walgreen's. Brax and I went swimming with Brett and Christal's family when they got there while Branden slept. He'd been running off 8 hours sleep for two night and he was exhausted. Right before the pool closed Bryant, Kelly, Errol and MaeBeth returned. We visited with them for a few minutes and headed to bed.

Day 4
The whole purpose of our trip was to celebrate with Bryant his accomplishment of graduating from Medical School. This was the day we were able to support him. The graduation was at 10 am and it was a rainy day in Des Moines, IA. We were going to go to a park after but because of the weather we headed to the Iowa Fairgrounds for lunch. Right by there they had a park that the kids were able to play at and it wasn't too wet. It had animals they could climb on and a big wooden train they could climb through. We let them play for a while before we got in the car and headed to Ft. Madison, IA for the night. When we got there and went to check in they didn't have our reservation or Bryant and Kelly's (I'd made them together). Luckily they had 2 empty rooms and we were able to take them. Our reservation got there the next day. That night we all went to dinner together. It was also Christal, our sister-in-law's, birthday. She did get the free dessert because we were nice enough to tell them it was her birthday. We had a great meal.
Day 5
Sunday was the morning of day 5. We got up and went to church in Ft. Madison, IA. We went to a tiny branch and it was very inspiring to be there with them. I'm grateful for the opportunity. After church we had lunch and headed to Nauvoo, IL. It was only like a 15 min drive. We went by the Smith Family Cemetery and homestead. We also went to the Red Brick Store. Following that we went over to the Bakery and Tin Shop with everyone else. We then split up and some of us went to the Browning Gun Shop and brick making areas. Branden and his brothers were fascinated with the gun shop. I didn't know that Browning patented so many guns to all different manufacturers. All the places we went were very interesting though. Following that we all headed to the Blacksmith Shop and got our Prairie Diamonds (nail rings). The pioneers didn't have a lot of money so some of them used the nails as wedding rings. We had to leave that presentation a little early though so we could make it to Carthage. Everyone but Bryant and Kelly went to Carthage Jail together. Even though I'd been there before I was still touched. The jailor had moved Joseph Smith and the men with him into his own private bedroom because he didn't believe they were criminals. It is such a sacred place and the Spirit there is amazing. I cried when we went into the room where Joseph and Hyrum were shot and killed. What amazing men Joseph and Hyrum were. I'm grateful for their examples.

Day 6
We had to get up early and get checked out so we could get to the Nauvoo Visitor's Center by 7:30 am for tickets. We all went on a wagon ride around Old Nauvoo. It was very informative and we're so glad we were able to go. We also went to learn how they made bricks. The kids wanted to play some of the games the pioneers did and dress up so we let them. We spent quite a bit of time there. It was Memorial Day. There was a band that came through and played the children's march so we attempted to get the kids to march. The younger ones did great, but Brax not so much. It was a lot of fun though. We spent all morning in Old Nauvoo and then headed up to the temple. Branden and Brax walked around the temple and counted the sun stones and stars. Brax was fascinated with the sun stones. We also went shopping. I had to go to the Fudge Factory while we were there and it was as good as I remember. We also went souvenir shopping. After that we headed to a local park and had lunch. It was a lot of fun to let the kids be out of the car and exploring. We headed out and were on our way to Sioux Falls, SD for the night. We stopped for dinner all together. Towards the end of the road trip we hit a major rain storm. I was driving. It was hard to see the lines on the freeway part of the time but we made it safely. I know I had some divine assistance that night. By the time we got to the hotel my hands were sore from gripping the steering wheel. We decided after that I could no longer drive because something happened every time I took control of the car.

Day 7
We once again got ready to hit the road again. We went to Falls Park in Sioux Falls, SD in the morning and took some family photos while hiking around. We had lunch and then got on the road. Along the way we saw signs for Wall Drug everywhere so we decided to stop and check it out. We let the kids play on the splash pad and looked around. We also had ice cream. It's an interesting place. Following that we headed to Palmer Gulch Resort and KOA. We got lost trying to find Little Caesars Pizza in Rapid City so we were a little late getting everyone their dinner. We stayed in a cabin all together and had fires every night because there was no furnace and it was cold. The first night we all kind of froze, but the second night was really nice.

We all got up and got ready for the day. We were staying together in a cabin in Palmer Gulch right outside of Hills City, SD. We left about 10 am and headed to Mount Rushmore. We were there until about 1 pm. Our little family hiked the trek all the way around. When it said strenuous hike, it wasn't kidding. By the time we got back to the bottom my legs were shaking. I didn't have any tennis shoes on either so that was part of it. Mount Rushmore was very pretty and interesting to learn about. We took a lot of pictures there. After that we went to Crazy Horse with Errol and MaeBeth. It was amazing how big it's going to be. So far only the face and top of the arm are done, but I'd love to see it when it's completed. Branden got us some pottery there that I love. After that we went back to the resort and did laundry, went swimming, bounced on the jumping bag, and the men and children played mini golf. Us ladies went shopping at the little shops as well. I bought a bunch of chocolate covered pretzels and loved the ones I had. They also had some good fudge there. That night everyone but Branden, myself, and our niece went to the laser light show at Crazy Horse. We stayed and tried to get our stuff packed and ready to go. We had steak, burgers, and hot dogs that night. It was a lot of fun to goof off and be together.

We got up and all got ready. We were heading a different direction than everyone else so we separated. The other 3 families were heading to Devil's Tower and up Spearfish Scenic Byway. I have a cousin that lives in Gillette, WY so we decided to go see him and his family instead. We visited with my cousin's wife and son (Melissa and Ethan) for about an hour and a half. Ethan was hilarious because he wanted to share everything and the second we got there we had to have the grand tour. It was fun to see them. We then got back on the road. We had a route planned out to go up to Lovell but when we got to Hwy 14A it was closed so we had to take a detour. We got a hold of the others and told them to take a different route on their way to Powell. I got extremely carsick on our drive through the windy roads. First time all trip amazingly enough. We got to Powell about 6:30 pm. We had dinner at Subway and I love their soups I found out. After that we fueled the car and went back to our hotel. Brax and I swam for about an hour and a half. We got ready for bed about 9 and the rest of the family got there about 10 pm. The front desk clerk held the pool open for us for an hour so Brax went swimming with his two uncles and the cousins that were there. It was pretty relaxing day.
Day 10
We got up and got ready to go. We left everyone on the morning of Day 10 in Powell, WY. We drove to Yellowstone National Park. Along the trek we were able to see some big horn sheep, buffalo, and elk. In Yellowstone they had places where they had 6-8 ft snow drifts so not a lot of animals were out and about. We spent a little time at Yellowstone Lake, but it was freezing and we were only in jackets. We also visited Old Faithful. We watched it shoot over the trees from the parking lot. We'd been following a slow truck and we decided what we saw was good enough. After leaving there we headed to Teton National Park. We did see some pelicans in the water. I love the Grand Tetons though and took a lot of pictures there. After driving through I wanted Branden to see Jackson Hole so we stopped there for about an hour and did some shopping. Brax and I decided to head all the way home so we'd have Saturday and Sunday to relax and get ready for everything to start back up again. We stopped in Evanston to refuel and visit with friends that were there. We also stopped in Santaquin to get Blizzards at Dairy Queen. After Santaquin we drove all the way home. We arrived here at approx 1:30 am and went to bed. We are glad to be home and are not planning any road trips any time soon. Although Brax and I would love to spend a week in South Dakota, but not for another year or two.

We stopped in Evanston to refuel and visit with friends that were there. We also stopped in Santaquin to get Blizzards at Dairy Queen. After Santaquin we drove all the way home. We arrived here at approx 1:30 am and went to bed. We are glad to be home and are not planning any road trips any time soon. Although Brax and I would love to spend a week in South Dakota, but not for another year or two.
